Lagos Nigeria – 21st May, Galaxy4Peace joined United Nation Education Scientific and Cultural Organization to celebrate World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development.

Annually observed on 21st of May after UNESCO adoption in 2001 and UN Assembly declaration in 2002, the Day celebrates not only the richness of the world’s cultures, but also the essential role of intercultural dialogue for achieving peace and sustainable development.
With the adoption in September 2015 of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development by the United Nations, and the Resolution A/C.2/70/L.59 on Culture and Sustainable Development adopted by the UN General Assembly in December 2015 , the message of the World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development is much more important than ever. The 17 Sustainable Development Goals can best be achieved by drawing upon the creative potential of the world’s diverse cultures, and engaging in continuous dialogue to ensure that all members of society benefit from sustainable development.

“Through our Teach Peace Early program in Nigerian schools and online campaign, we teach young people on the potential that lies in culture as a means of achieving prosperity, sustainable development and global peaceful coexistence” Precious Ajunwa, Galaxy4Peace founder shared.

Providing an occasion to promote culture and highlight the significance of its diversity as an agent of inclusion and positive change, the day presents an opportunity to celebrate culture’s manifold forms, from the tangible and intangible, to creative industries, to the diversity of cultural expressions, and to reflect on how these contribute to dialogue, mutual understanding, and the social, environmental and economic vectors of sustainable development.

The day provides us with an opportunity to deepen our understanding of the values of cultural diversity and to advance the four goals of the UNESCO Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions.

There is no doubt, cultural diversity is a driving force of development, not only with respect to economic growth, but also as a means of leading a more fulfilling intellectual, emotional, moral and spiritual life.

Three-quarter of the world’s major conflicts have a cultural dimension, hence to achieve peace, stability and development, we need to bridge the gap between cultures.

“While we celebrate the richness of the world’s cultures, we call on everyone to celebrate diversity, practice acceptance, choose peaceful options to conflict and not forget the essential role intercultural dialogue play for achieving sustainable peace and development” Miss Ajunwa shared.

The day provides us with an opportunity to deepen our understanding of the values of cultural diversity and to advance the four goals of the UNESCO Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions.
